Getting a workout when the weather doesn't permit you to ride outside is important for top cycling performance. Winters in northern climates and thunderstorms everywhere require cyclists to stay indoors. Pro cyclists often travel to warmer climates during the winter to be able to continue cycling outside. However, when they are indoors, they often ride the same bike that they use when they are outside.
Professional cyclists use their road bikes to train indoors by attaching their back wheel to what's called a вЂњcycling trainer.вЂќ When a road bike is connected to a cycling trainer, the back wheel comes in contact with the trainer allowing the cyclist to use the road bike as a stationary device. Most trainers have adjustable resistance, and you can change the resistance by adjusting your gears. Cycling trainers allow you to do strength and power intervals. The benefit of using your road bike indoors is that you practice in exactly the same position you would use while riding outdoors.
Spin bikes are another way pros use to stay in shape when they can't ride outside. The option is less widely used, but it is viable. Spin bikes offer a good range of resistance. Riders can use the spin bike for anything from easy pedaling to intense interval training. A drawback of the spin bike is that riders aren't in the same position that they would use on road bikes, so they exercise their muscles differently. Pros are more likely to use a spin bike occasionally when it's not practical to bring their own bike, for example if they go to the gym or training center.
Pros also use rollers in the off-season to stay in shape and improve their cycling technique. Rollers tend to offer less resistance than a cycling trainer, but they do have benefits. Rollers help to improve bike-handling skills, stability and balance. Unlike a cycling trainer where you are hooked in with little need to balance, nothing holds you to the rollers. You're simply pedaling on top, so you need to balance or you'll fall off. Rollers are also great for creating an efficient pedal stroke. When cycling, you should push at an even effort for the entire rotation, rather than simply forcing your foot down at the front of the rotation. Rollers are excellent for working on this consistent effort, because if you're not keeping a balanced effort, you'll fall off.
Riding in the Rain
Riding indoors is a good idea during thunderstorms, which can be dangerous. Riding outside in rain -- but not during a thunderstorm -- is a good thing to practice in case it rains during one of your races. You need to know how to react on slippery surfaces. However, lightning isn't something you want to encounter. If you hear thunder, grab your bike and head indoors.
